We Asked Y(O)U Answered: How Do You Like to Watch Movies?
In 2024 alone, 569 movies were released in the United States and Canada. With so many movie options available, everyone seems to have their preference for how they like to watch their movies. Some love the experience of a movie theater — the fresh popcorn paired with a big soda, the loud acoustics, big screen and large comfy chairs. However, others prefer the comforts of their home, curling up on the couch with a blanket and streaming their favorite movies with friends. With such mixed opinions on movie watching preferences, The Commentator asked students how they prefer to watch movies — streaming at home or on the big screen.

“I prefer watching movies at home. It is firstly cheaper, and more importantly I can watch whatever movie I want from the comfort of my own home without having to be around strangers. My most recent watch is “The End of the Tour,” a 2015 film about David Foster Wallace, and you’re not going to find that in theaters. Most of the movies I want to watch are like that.”

“My preferences depend on my mood. I do love going to the movies with friends and getting snacks and a drink. Going out to the movies is a good way to have a social gathering and see friends. It’s also a fun activity to do! The prices have gone up which make it a bit harder to go but I love going! I just watched “Snow White” in theaters.”

“I prefer watching movies in the theater with my friends. Though it has been a while, the last movie I went to see in theaters was “Oppenheimer.””

“My preference for where I watch my movies depends on the specific type of movie I’m watching. Some movies require commentary and discussion with friends, which is something you can’t do in a movie theater. You’ll annoy everyone and ultimately get shushed. However, some movies you just have to watch in theaters. Any Marvel movie must be watched in the theater. On the other hand, rom coms definitely need to be watched at home with friends.”

“I usually watch movies at home, but I prefer watching highly anticipated movies in theaters. Nothing beats sitting in the theater with a bucket of popcorn, a soda and the excitement of seeing a movie all your friends have been talking about. The last movie I watched was “The Life List” on Netflix and it was not my favorite, definitely did not scratch the romcom itch.”

“Originally, I was the type of person to enjoy watching movies and shows at home. However, I think it’s a bit more authentic to go to a movie theater. It creates this atmosphere that transcends you into the film itself. The feeling you get, going to a movie with your friends, is so memorable. That’s what makes the AMC Club so amazing because it lets you attend these events completely free and takes you to a whole new world. The last movie I watched was “The Minecraft Movie.” Although it wasn’t the greatest, it was very memorable with the people I watched it with.”

“I prefer watching movies in theaters because I love the wide chairs and big screen, especially when a movie is played in 3D. It’s an overall fun experience to be watching a movie with so many people. The last movie I watched in theaters was “Wicked.” This was a great movie that I truly loved! It was very animated and an overall great film!”
