We Asked Y(O)U Answered: What Are Your Thoughts on Coffee?
Americans drink about 400 million cups of coffee a day, making it one of the most popular beverages in the country. With the endless options in coffee beans, creamers, brewing methods, and ingredient ratios, coffee is incredibly versatile. Many people rely on the caffeine boost to get them through their day. Others simply just enjoy the taste. The Commentator asked students what their opinion on coffee is and what their go-to coffee order in the YU cafeteria is.
David Deutsch (YC ‘26)
“I think coffee is just as much a social phenomenon as it is a beverage. I drink coffee not only because it keeps me productive, but because it’s what productive people drink. My taste in coffee reflects this mindset. I don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles. I enjoy the simplicity of a plain black cup of joe.”
Talia Isaacs (SCW ‘27)
“I love coffee but I drink it only for the taste. I honestly don’t get energy from caffeine. If I wanted to, I could go right to bed after drinking a cup of coffee. I am very particular about the taste of my coffee though. I personally am of the opinion that coffee should have more milk and creamer than actual coffee. My go to coffee in the cafeteria is the dark roast iced coffee with soy milk and the caramel mocha sweetener.”
Bryan Weisz (YC ‘26)
“I strongly dislike all coffee. I don’t drink it because I hate the taste. I drink Coke occasionally, but nothing to do with caffeine. I usually find myself able to stay awake without caffeine.”
Gittel Friedman (SCW ‘26)
“Coffee is my absolute love! Coffee makes my day every single day without fail. I’m a big fan of all the different coffee they offer in the cafeteria. I can get hot coffee or cold coffee with ice, depending on the vibe I’m going for. I love how the 215 cafeteria has a Dunkin’ Donuts option. My recent go-to order though has been the cold coffee from the machine in the 245 cafeteria with a little brown sugar. I love coffee and anything about it so I will honestly go for any coffee available.”
David Yagudayev (YC ‘25)
“I don’t drink coffee and never intend to start. I think that it does more harm than good. I only consume chai and water and an occasional Snapple.”
Miriam Kassin (SCW ‘26)
“I don’t drink coffee because I am scared to become dependent on it. There are so many people who say that they cannot survive without their three cups of coffee and I want to ensure that my ability to function is not dependent on something like coffee.”
Minnie Schwartz (SCW ‘25)
“I love coffee. It’s the thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. Going to sleep and knowing I’m going to have a good coffee in the morning is such a good feeling. In the caf, the coffee just isn’t good so I refrain from that but otherwise I make a coffee every morning. I also refuse to pay for coffee at a shop because I know I can make it better and I won’t pay 8 dollars for a mediocre coffee.”
Aytan Waxman (YC’25)
“I would say I am a coffee purist. Just looking for the blackest cup o’ Joe out there. I take very hawkish stances against milks, sugars, and creamers. Very skeptical of Dunkin’ Donuts that they secretly add sugar even to their midnight blend. I actually love Turkish coffee and getting to ‘drink the mud’ and enjoy the savory taste of the coffee grounds.”
Shoshana Fisher (SCW ‘26)
“I actually don’t drink coffee but my take on hot chocolate is piping hot. I’ll take the 245 hot chocolate over the Dunkin’ 215 hot chocolate any day of the week. Some may choose the name brand when given the choice, but the Dunkin’ name isn’t enough to stack up to the rich, flavorful, chocolaty option in 245.”
