From the President’s Desk: TAC — Past, Present, and Future

My go-to fun fact is that I’m afraid of movies. When I share this irrational fear at a shabbat meal, people are always shocked. They are often confused and proceed to ask me a series of questions. What is there to be afraid of in movies? Are you also scared of TV? (Yes.) Don’t you know it’s contained in a small device and not real? (Really? I never knew.) A movie is a commitment of only few hours that you... Read more

From the President’s Desk: YSU — Chanukah: A Time for Reflection

December 18, 2016 7:09 am Published by Leave your thoughts

More and more over my past few years here at Yeshiva University, I have noticed the various message boards across all social media platforms that pertain to Yeshiva University. Most of the posts that I notice are complaints. People are complaining about how something is wrong with YU, or how our school has no money, or how the administration does not care about the school. These are statements that, besides not being true, have no basis behind them. The only... Read more

From the President’s Desk: SYMSSC — Autumn in the Heights

Now that the Jewish holiday season has ended, we have returned to school with almost half of the fall semester still ahead. Some students around the country, in other schools, would probably be devastated if they woke in mid-November to learn that they still had an entire half semester ahead of them. I, however, am looking forward to a high-intensity, compressed semester lasting just two months. It is almost as bracing and invigorating as the cold weather that is certainly... Read more

As our country is seething with excitement about its upcoming presidential election, our university is similarly anticipating a change in leadership at its highest level. As reported previously by The Commentator, Chairman of the Board and selection committee member Moshael Straus announced via email on September 13 that the selection committee has voted to advance the candidacy of Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman and “it is anticipated his nomination will be forwarded to the full Board of Trustees” for a confirmation... Stop Focusing on the Face; Focus on the Rest

April 18, 2016 2:40 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

We humans like to draw our attention to the face. A quick scan is all we need to generate a first impression, and given that faces tend not to be hidden, we figure our cursory evaluation is more than sufficient for sizing up the visage to which we’ve turned our attention. Similarly, we use the face as a means to describe a large part of the whole, even when it only represents a fraction of that whole. Sure, we recognize... Read more

The student council presidents thank The Commentator for offering us this regular column to update the student body on Student Government’s activities, share our thoughts and goals for the future, and contribute to a dialogue about issues on campus. We hope this window into Student Government inspires students to engage with life on campus. For those unaware, the Wilf Campus Student Government consists of four undergraduate student councils whose presidents work together to create a vibrant student experience. The Yeshiva... Read more
